Marco Botti is eyeing a second shot in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes for 5-year-old, Aljazzi, at this year’s Royal Ascot. The impressive mare could be looking to go one better in the mile contest on Wednesday 20th June, having finished recently finished third on her return to the track at Sandown.
The Italian trainer appeared happy with her recent performance, saying, “The ground was not ideal, as the rain made it soft ground before the race, but we took the chance and I think she ran really well.”

Botti believes that Aljazzi won’t have too many runs this year, and is instead targetting a direct route to Royal Ascot.
On last year’s Royal Meeting, he added, “That was her best run last season and going straight to Ascot gives her time to recover.” Following a trip to Ascot, Botti posits that a place in the Falmouth Stakes could be next on the agenda. The 5-year-old is certainly worth keeping tabs on this year.
Wednesday 20th June could also see Newmarket trainer, James Tate, in action this year at Ascot with Invincible Army. The 3-year-old colt made a winning comeback in the Pavilion Stakes at the track on Wednesday – the 11/8 favourite, ridden by Ryan Moore, stretched clear for a length and a half to overcome rival Eqtidaar.
Speaking of his victory on Wednesday, Tate said, “I’m chuffed to bits with that. We knew he had trained on, it’s just a question of how far we can go, I guess.”
